Real earnings abroad

After living costs abroad, transfer fees, the exchange rate, family support and the loan: what going abroad really saves each month, how long the migration cost takes to earn back, and how that compares with staying.

Going abroad versus staying, over 24 months
− रू 3,55,920
staying leaves you this much better off
Real monthly saving − रू 3,580 after everything abroad and everything at home
Saved by staying instead रू 5,000 income minus costs at home
Monthly difference − रू 8,580
Migration cost earned back in never, at this rate
Total saved over 24 months − रू 2,35,920 after the रू 1,50,000 it cost to go
Saved by staying, over 24 months रू 1,20,000
Spent at home — रू 39,420 Actually saved — रू 0

In these numbers, going abroad leaves you worse off than staying. That is a real outcome for many people, not a mistake in the page. Check the figures with someone who has done this work — and do not let a recruiter round them up.

Each month you earn ر.ق 1,800, spend ر.ق 700 to live there, and send home ر.ق 1,080 after the fee — which at 36.5 is रू 39,420.

Of that, रू 43,000 is already spoken for at home — family, the loan, insurance. What is actually saved is − रू 3,580 a month.

Staying would leave you रू 3,55,920 better off over 24 months. In these numbers, going abroad does not pay.

What you can do next
  • Before signing, ask what would have to change: a higher salary, provided housing, a smaller loan. Put those in and see whether it turns.
  • Talk to someone who has done this job in this country — not the agent — about what the overtime and the costs really were.
This answer assumes
  • Every figure stays the same for the whole contract — salary, costs, the rate, the family's needs. They will not.
  • One transfer home a month, and everything left after living costs is sent.
  • The exchange rate is yours: 36.5 NPR per unit. It moves, and it decides a lot.
  • Overtime is paid as entered. Many are not; put less if unsure.
  • No months without pay, no medical emergency, no return ticket, no agent taking more than agreed. These happen.
  • The comparison assumes the home income entered is really available to you.

Questions people ask

The page says I would lose money. Is it wrong?

Probably not. A modest salary with a large loan and a family to support often saves nothing after costs. That is exactly what the page is for. Change one thing at a time and see what would have to be true for it to work.

Why is the exchange rate my job to enter?

Because it moves every day and no site can promise you a rate for two years. Enter today's, then try a lower one — that is the honest range.

What counts as the cost of going?

Everything paid once before you earn: visa, agent or manpower fee, ticket, medical, training, and interest on money borrowed for those. The page shows how many months it takes to earn that back.

Should I count overtime?

Only what is in writing. Overtime promised in conversation often does not arrive. Put zero and see if the answer still works.

Do you keep what I type here?

No. The figures are used to work out the answer and are not stored, and never appear in the page address.

These are estimates. The figures depend entirely on the numbers you enter and on assumptions that are listed on every result. They are not financial advice, and a bank, employer or authority may use different rules. Check anything important with them before you decide.

We do not keep your figures. Salary, debt and savings you type here are used to work out the answer and are not stored, and never appear in the page address. The only thing remembered is your country and language choice (a small cookie), so the currency can be suggested next time — never a figure you typed. Anonymous counters record that a calculation happened, not what it was.
